In Internal Family Systems (IFS), they are the name of a kind of reactionary protector part in a persons psyche strives to extinguish emotional pain. However, reactive protectors are “emergency response workers” in the mind. Reactive protectors tend to be fierce and use extreme measures like alcohol and drug abuse, binge eating, excessive shopping, promiscuity, cutting, and even suicide in order to extinguish emotional pain and suffering.

A systems state depends on the system’s previous state. Change will follow different pathways that are shaped by the system’s past.
For example; memory foam pillows and suicidality… When being compressed, memory foam rapidly changes but when expanding in the opposite direction, memory foam changes much more slowly. Change in one direction therefore does not mirror change in the opposite direction.

In Internal Family Systems (IFS), they are inner subpersonalities of the mind that function independently and have a full range of feelings, thoughts, beliefs, and sensations. These parts take on various roles within the persons internal emotional system. They contribute in a variety of ways to help the person to have a balanced and general sense of well-being.

Serotonin

A brain chemical that puts the person is a rest mode.  It also decreases the feeling of pleasure and craving.
