While all of nature contained in this realm is described as being infused with mystical qualities, the most common of elements, grass, is one of the first that captures the NDEr’s attention. Many are deeply moved when experiencing grass for the first time. It clearly has much more significance than the grass we are familiar with.

Water is described as crystal clear and radiating energy. It is normally flowing, as in a stream through a park or meadow, or from a rise in a city setting. Lakes are rarely seen, while beach settings were not recorded in any of the testimonials studied, although this may have been encountered. Water, very often, is the border that cannot be crossed.

The animals that are occasionally encountered are most often horses or cows wandering in fields.

Gold is the material most often and most specifically pointed out by NDErs. It may be found as part of the exterior or interior of buildings, large gates leading into cities, and within clothing worn by powerful spiritual beings, God, or god-like figures.

Descriptions of other realms seen in NDEs clearly correspond to the culture and environment of the NDEr, possibly more so than any other element. They are so different that it is difficult for me to accept the notion that they are all referring to the same "place." This leads me to the conclusion that either (a) there are different types of realms for different people, depending on the culture or perhaps like-mindedness, and/or (b) that the afterlife is like a shared lucid dream, with souls co-creating the environment, so there would be a lot of diversity, or (c) the other realm is given actual perceivable form by a person's mind. It objectively exists, but the soul's mind overlays it with features familiar and comprehensible to them, which is what enables them to actually experience it. This might be the same with other elements of NDEs and corresponds to the idea that a being of light might be the same for everyone (or at least the same type of being), but is perceived as the Buddha, Mohammed, Jesus, etc. So, the other world could be just as real as the being of light, but one person will perceive it as a lush village with fine grass huts, and another as a European city.

It is worth noting that people in non-western societies *never* report traditionally western features like Greek or Roman architecture, libraries, centers for learning or personal development, etc. Instead of large cities, people in small-scale indigenous societies will describe small villages.

The colors NDErs experience you cannot find here. The music you hear there is different from here. I know people have been looking for these colors or for this music their whole life after their NDE, though to no avail. It is not from this world. That is the essence of it. It's much more than what we see on planet Earth, in this physical realm.
