While NDErs encounter more beings resembling themselves in this realm, they are most often accompanied by a more advanced entity for their life review such as a guide, or spiritual being.
It is often during their life review that an NDEr experiences a profound revelation. They realize that they didn’t experience negative judgment, even as there were events or actions exposed that they were not proud of and were uncomfortable reliving. They did not have the impression they were there to receive punishment or atone for past sins. There was never a sense that hell awaited them, as we are often taught in organized religion. They realize they are their own harshest judge.
The life-review is a most powerful experience that has the greatest influence on how the NDEr approaches life and those they are in relationship with in the future.
The panoramic life review, per se, is not that common across cultures.
Life-reviews are pretty common in so-called "fear-death experiences" — when someone believes they're going to die, yet was never physically close to death.
People who attempt suicide commonly do not have life-reviews.
Allan Kellehear suggested that life-reviews are rare in indigenous societies because, unlike “historic religions,” which “link death with conscience, and conscience with identity after death,” in indigenous societies, individuals would not “review their past personal lives in search of a sense of identity.”
The idea of some kind of evaluation of earthly life is very common in cross-cultural NDEs, and some have life-review-type themes.
In the Sumerian account of the death of the king Bilgames (Gilgamesh) — possibly the world's oldest NDE — he meets the afterlife deities, and during their judgment of him, they review his career, his heroic exploits, and his perpetuation of the proper religious customs and rituals.
During a life-review, the subject feels the presence and renewed experience of not only every act but also every thought from one’s past life. Everything happens at about the same moment — you experience (re-live) all aspects of your life from birth, and sometimes even before, in relationship with others.
Because one is connected with the memories, emotions, and consciousness of another person, you experience the consequences of your thoughts, words, and actions to that other person. And one realizes that all of it is an energy field that influences oneself as well as others.
The life-review is a learning experience, and that's it. It’s all about love and helping people.
