Introduction

This course is a broad overview of Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, otherwise known as EMDR.

The courses purpose is to give people a general understanding of this therapy as a therapeutic option for emotional issues they may have in their life.

EMDR was first developed in 1987 by Francine Shapiro as a treatment for emotional healing. It’s primary aim is to render traumatic memories effectively powerless over a persons emotional well-being.

By reprocessing these memories, patients find that their responses to them — fear, horror, helplessness — diminish significantly, leading to increased emotional stability and reduced PTSD symptoms. The overarching goal is not just to cope better with daily life but to transform one’s pain into a personal power, enabling healing that extends well beyond the therapy sessions.

Besides PTSD, EMDR has also been used to successfully treat MANY other conditions, such as phobias, depression, and physical pain to name a few.
