Therapies and Concepts Helpful for HSPs

  • Dialectic Behavior Therapy (DBT)

  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

  • Internal Family Systems (IFS)

  • Mindfulness Based Cognitive Behavior Therapy (MBCBT)

  • Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR)

Psychotherapy in its broadest sense is a collection of paths toward wisdom and wholeness. If you are an HSP with a troubled childhood, it is almost essential that you take that path.

Because the highly sensitive reflect more than others about themselves and also must in some way account for being different from others, they are especially likely to come to the first therapy session with well-developed ideas about what is wrong with them. It only makes sense for the therapist to listen well to their reasoning. They have known themselves much longer and have listened to many others comment about them. While listening, the clinician can consider whether the patient is correct, and if not, whether this false positive is due to misinformation or defensiveness, leading to the least self-damaging diagnosis, sensitivity, or whether theirs is a false negative and they have mistaken the normal characteristics of their trait for a disorder.
